An excerpt from the Algernon Charles Swinburne poem “The Garden of Proserpine” provides the foundation for “AN ETERNAL NIGHT.” Tense melodies and descending harmonies illustrate the author’s struggle to characterize death and the afterlife.

A trio of Broadway-pop style ballads inspired by the adventures of everyone’s favorite boy wizard.

FALL, LEAVES, FALL

A piece that celebrates nature’s transition from fall to winter. A simple melody is explored in counterpoint and returns at the end of the piece like a chilly autumn breeze. Text by Emily Brontë.

FOR MY FATHER

Three advanced choral works with text from Shakespeare plays.

I. FULL FATHOM FIVE

Melodies ebb and flow like the ocean in this piece about underwater mysteries. Text from “The Tempest.”

II. MORE THAN WORDS

A setting of Goneril’s words to King Lear in the opening scene of the Shakespeare play. The gentle harmonies and sweet declarations of love that open the piece contrast with the rhythmic intensity and overlapping textures of the middle section, revealing Goneril’s desperation to flatter her father. She regains composure in the final moments of the piece, declaring simply “Beyond all, I love you.”

III. ALL IN ALL

“He was a man, take him for all in all.” Hamlet’s quote from the eponymous play becomes a lament for his father in this setting full of lush harmonies and rich textures.

GOBLIN MARKET

A quirky and theatrical seven-movement piece that illustrates the temptation of a young woman by strange “fruit-merchant men.” Piano accompaniment is challenging and fun. Text by Christina Rossetti.

MOTHER O’ MINE

Evocative vignettes about the redemptive power of a mother’s love, interspersed with a bright, hopeful chorus. Text by Rudyard Kipling.

NO FRIEND LIKE A SISTER

Sweet three-part harmonies declare the strength of sisterhood in this a cappella work. Text from Christina Rossetti’s “Goblin Market.”

ROUND THEIR REST

“Keep me in your heart, always think of me. We’ll never be apart because within your heart I’ll be.” This sweet and heartfelt song tells the story of growing up and finding independence while staying close to the ones we love.

Cascade Crest

A light and enchanting melody in the opening contrasts with a dramatic and powerful middle section in this piece for early intermediate concert band.

Syncopation and mixed meter characterize this adventurous and energetic piece for the upper-level concert band. A quirky melody in the ensemble’s low register explores unexpected intervals while pulsating, staccato eighth-notes in the upper woodwinds drive the music onward.
